Russia launched a missile and drone attack on a key Naftogaz facility: what we know

2 June 12:50

On the night of June 1, Russia launched a massive attack on one of Naftogaz Group’s key facilities in the Kharkiv region. This was reported by Serhiy Koretskyi, chairman of the board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Serhiy Koretskyi stated that the strike was deliberately carried out in two stages. First, Russian forces attacked the facility with drones, and then repeated the strike with missiles.

According to him, this tactic is used to inflict maximum damage not only on infrastructure but also on people who may be working on site after the first wave of the attack.

The head of Naftogaz directly called this a deliberate tactic of terror. He noted that this very tactic had already led to tragedies in the past, when company employees and rescue workers were caught in follow-up strikes.

Where the strike occurred

This refers to a key facility of the Naftogaz group in the Kharkiv region. Ukrainian and regional media, citing the company’s statement, specify that the attack targeted critical infrastructure in the Kharkiv region.

The company did not specify the exact location of the facility for security reasons. At the same time, Naftogaz had previously reported a series of strikes on gas production and oil and gas infrastructure in the Kharkiv region.

Are there any casualties or injuries?

According to initial official reports, there were no casualties. Serhiy Koretskyi emphasized this separately.

The company explained that following previous attacks, stricter safety protocols were implemented to minimize risks to employees. This likely helped prevent new casualties during the current combined strike.

Why is this attack particularly dangerous

Naftogaz emphasizes that Russia is deliberately using a tactic of repeated strikes. It is designed so that after the first strike, repair crews, rescue workers, and personnel working to mitigate the damage are put at risk.

Koretsky recalled the night of May 5, when Naftogaz employees and State Emergency Service rescuers were killed as a result of a similar tactic.

"Komersant Ukrainian" Previously, there were reports of repeated Russian strikes on Naftogaz facilities in various regions, including Kharkiv, Poltava, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk.

What is known about previous strikes on Naftogaz

This is not the first attack on the company’s facilities. As recently as May 29, Russian forces struck Naftogaz Group infrastructure in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. At that time, the company reported significant damage to equipment and fires.

In addition, strikes on Naftogaz’s gas production facilities in the Kharkiv region and other regions were recorded in May and February 2026. This indicates a systematic nature to the attacks on the company’s energy infrastructure.

Why Naftogaz facilities are critical

The Naftogaz Group is one of the key entities in Ukraine’s energy sector. It includes, in particular, Ukrgazvydobuvannya—the country’s largest gas production company—and Ukrtransnafta, the operator of main oil pipelines.

This is precisely why attacks on the group’s facilities have not only a local but also a strategic impact on Ukraine’s energy system.
