Russia has launched large-scale nuclear exercises involving more than 64,000 troops immediately following similar joint maneuvers between Belarus and Russia. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

As noted, the exercises will take place from May 19 to 21. Moscow claims that the maneuvers are being conducted amid a “threat of aggression” and are intended to test the combat readiness of strategic deterrence forces.

According to the Russian ministry, over 64,000 military personnel and more than 7,800 pieces of military equipment are involved in the exercises. The maneuvers will cover the full cycle of preparation and simulated use of nuclear weapons.

Special attention during the exercises is being paid to coordination with systems involving the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory. Units of the Strategic Missile Forces, as well as forces from the Russian Northern and Pacific Fleets, are also participating in the maneuvers.

The Russian Ministry of Defense states that the key objectives of the exercises are to refine mechanisms for deterring a potential adversary, improve the coordination of troops, and test the readiness of strategic force command and control systems.

As a reminder, Belarus, together with Russia, recently began exercises on the combat use of tactical nuclear weapons. Minsk has assured that the maneuvers are not directed against third countries.

Ukraine responded to these statements, noting that Belarus is turning into a nuclear springboard for Russia.
