Explosions rocked a gas pipeline in Dagestan: what is known about the fire in Kizilyurt

On the evening of June 9, three explosions occurred on a main gas pipeline near the city of Kizilyurt in Dagestan, Russia. A massive fire subsequently broke out at the site. Russian authorities and media reported the incident, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

According to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations in Dagestan, a report of a gas pipeline explosion followed by a fire was received at 7:45 p.m. local time. The pipeline in question is a main gas pipeline with a diameter of 1,200 mm.

“Reports have been received of a gas pipeline explosion in the city of Kyzylurt, followed by a fire. According to preliminary information, three explosions occurred on a main gas pipeline with a diameter of 1,200 millimeters,” the Dagestan Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.

The agency noted that details regarding the circumstances of the incident are being clarified.

What happened in Kizilyurt

According to preliminary data, the explosions occurred on a section of the main gas pipeline in the industrial zone of Kizilyurt. This was followed by a so-called flare, and the height of the flames, according to Russian media reports, reached about 15 meters.

Dry grass also caught fire near the accident site.

According to Russian agencies, Kizilyurt city authorities suggested that the fire could have spread to a gas distribution station in the city’s industrial zone.

As of the evening of June 9, Russian authorities stated that there were no casualties or injuries.

Was there an evacuation?

Russian agencies reported the evacuation of residents from the area near the explosion.

The evacuation affected about 300 homes, after which people were allowed to return. At the same time, some Russian media reports mention more than 140 evacuated people.

Rescue units and specialized equipment were deployed to extinguish the fire. Later, Russian authorities stated that the fire had been brought under control.

What is known about the causes

As of this writing, only the fact of the explosions and fire has been officially confirmed. The Russian side has not publicly disclosed the causes of the incident.
