Russia is preparing a new series of targeted attacks against Ukraine’s critical infrastructure. This time, the enemy’s main targets could be water supply facilities and large boiler plants. This was reported by Serhiy Sukhomlyn, head of Ukraine’s State Agency for Infrastructure Restoration and Development, in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to Sukhomlyn, following attacks on combined heat and power plants and other thermal power generation facilities, Russia may now focus on the water supply systems of Ukrainian cities.
“They struck the CHP plants. The next step will be to destroy thermal power generation—that is, large boiler houses, thermal power plants, and cogeneration facilities, which they are already trying to destroy. And most importantly—water utility facilities,” Sukhomlyn stated.
The agency head emphasized that in many medium-sized cities, only one or two key pumping stations are operational. Damage to even one of them will affect the functioning and daily life of the entire town.
“The destruction of such a station—if it is the only one—would immediately and automatically halt the water supply to the city, because it would be impossible to draw water,” Sukhomlyn explained.
The consequences of such a scenario could extend far beyond water-related issues, as water systems are interconnected with other urban infrastructure systems. Therefore, damage to a single critical facility could simultaneously affect water supply, sewage systems, the healthcare system, and heat distribution. Without a stable water supply, medical facilities, schools, and daycare centers will face difficulties in their operations.
“This means hospitals that aren’t functioning, schools and kindergartens that aren’t functioning. And most importantly—the heating system won’t be working,” emphasized the head of the State Recovery Agency.
He stressed that Ukraine must respond to this threat immediately.
“This will be the number one problem if we do not respond to these intentions today,” noted the head of the State Agency for Reconstruction.
