Life expectancy for Ukrainian men has dropped to 60 years: a demographer explains the reasons

Due to the war, the average life expectancy for men in Ukraine has dropped to approximately 60 years. This estimate was provided by Oleksandr Gladun, deputy director of the Institute of Demography, in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to him, it is currently impossible to make precise calculations, as official demographic statistics have been unavailable since the start of the full-scale invasion. However, expert estimates indicate a significant decline in life expectancy.
“Today, it stands at about 60 years,” says Gladun.
He noted that before the COVID-19 pandemic, this figure was about 67 years. Initially, life expectancy declined due to the coronavirus, and later the war significantly exacerbated the negative impact.
“The key factor is the war,” the demographer emphasized.
According to him, this is not just about the deaths of military personnel and civilians. The war also increases the rate of premature mortality due to constant stress, reduced access to medical care, and a general deterioration in living conditions.
At the same time, Gladun believes that once the war ends, the situation will gradually improve. He predicts that in about 7–10 years, average life expectancy could return to pre-war levels.
