Cucumber prices have fallen by 21% over the past week: what’s happening in the market
17 April 21:25
Prices for greenhouse cucumbers have dropped sharply in Ukraine. This is reported by EastFruit , according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to EastFruit, producers are selling cucumbers for 90–145 UAH/kg, which is on average 21% cheaper than a week earlier.
Why are prices falling?
The key reason is an imbalance between supply and demand.
Analysts note:
- harvest volumes in greenhouses are increasing,
- demand remains subdued.
As a result, there is more produce than the market can quickly absorb.
The warehouse problem
Large greenhouse operations report significant product surpluses in warehouses.
Because of this, producers are forced to lower prices to avoid accumulating unsold vegetables.
Import pressure
An additional factor is competition from imports.
In particular, cucumbers from Poland are selling for as low as 70 UAH/kg, and importers have substantial stockpiles accumulated earlier.
This is forcing Ukrainian producers to lower their prices even further.
Comparison with last year
Despite the drop, current prices are still about 15% higher than last year.
In other words, the market remains relatively expensive on an annual basis, but is adjusting rapidly in the short term.
Trends in recent weeks
The downward trend continues: in early April, prices stood at 125–165 UAH/kg, already 10% lower than a week earlier.
The current drop has only reinforced this trend.
What does this mean
The situation in the cucumber market indicates:
- a seasonal increase in supply,
- price sensitivity to imports,
- producers’ dependence on sales velocity.
For consumers, this means short-term price reductions.
For producers, it means the risk of losses due to overproduction.
