The U.S. budget for 2027 does not include funding for the USAI program for Ukraine

The U.S. budget proposal for 2027 does not include separate funding for the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which effectively means there will be no new budget allocations under this initiative, reports "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Interfax-Ukraine.
The issue of continued support for Ukraine and previously allocated funds was raised by Senator Angus King of Maine. The discussion centered on $400 million provided for by a bipartisan, bicameral act of the U.S. Congress last year. According to participants in the hearing, these funds were recently announced and arrived in March, but their distribution is still ongoing and is expected to begin shortly.

Responding to Senator King’s question regarding funding for the initiative to support Ukraine, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagset noted that Washington expects greater financial participation from European countries.
“We want Europe to step up, fund, and shoulder this burden. These are wealthy countries with a GDP of $20 trillion compared to an economy of $2 trillion. Europe can step up, Europe can fund this… If this is so important to Europe… then European countries should pay for it,” he stated during a U.S. Senate committee hearing on Pentagon budget issues.
A separate comparison was presented of the levels of support for Ukraine from the U.S. and Europe. According to the information provided, Europe will provide 99% of the support in 2026.
As previously reported, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hagset noted that $400 million in funding for Ukraine, previously approved by Congress, was released after several weeks of internal reviews and delays at the U.S. Department of Defense, which drew criticism from some U.S. lawmakers.
