Russians attacked Izmail in the Odesa region: port infrastructure damaged

2 May 05:55

On the night of May 1, Russian forces again attacked Izmail in the Odesa region with strike drones. Port infrastructure on the Danube came under fire. This was reported by the operational headquarters of the Izmail District State Administration, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

The District State Administration noted that air defense forces responded effectively, and rescue workers and relevant services were on the scene.

What is known about the attack on Izmail

Russian troops once again attacked Izmail with strike drones. The target was port infrastructure on the Danube, which is of key importance for Ukrainian logistics and exports.

According to preliminary data from local authorities, most of the drones were shot down. The consequences of the attack are assessed as minimal, but information regarding the exact extent of the damage is being clarified.

The Regional State Administration thanked the military, air defense forces, and State Emergency Service personnel for protecting the city and mitigating the effects of the shelling.

Are there any casualties?

Reports from local authorities do not mention any fatalities or injuries. According to preliminary information, the main consequences of the attack involve damage to port infrastructure.

At the same time, official agencies continue to assess the extent of the damage following the nighttime strike.

Izmail has been under regular attack for over a week

Izmail and other Danube ports in the Odesa region have recently been regularly targeted by Russian attacks. In particular, the night before, on the night of May 1, Russia also attacked port infrastructure in the Odesa region, specifically facilities in the Danube and Greater Odesa areas.

According to the USPA, berths and warehouses were damaged, and local fires broke out, which were quickly extinguished.

Why is Russia attacking the Danube ports?

The Danube ports, particularly Izmail, are of strategic importance to Ukraine. Following the blockade and ongoing threats in the Black Sea, the Danube route has become one of the key routes for the export of agricultural products, cargo, and the operation of Ukrainian logistics.

Izmail is located near the border with Romania, so attacks on this area pose risks not only to Ukraine but also to the security of the NATO region.

As Ukraine’s largest port on the Danube, Izmail has already been hit by Russian strikes on multiple occasions. During previous attacks, administrative, industrial, and railway facilities were damaged, yet the port continued to operate.

Russian drones violate Romanian airspace

During attacks on Danube ports, Russian drones have repeatedly violated Romanian airspace or crashed near the Ukrainian-Romanian border.

In late April, Reuters reported that debris from two drones was found on Romanian territory following a nighttime Russian attack on Ukraine. The debris was discovered in the Galati area and Tulcea County, and the Romanian Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense condemned Russia’s actions, stating that they pose a threat to regional security and NATO security.
