A fire has broken out again in the Chernobyl exclusion zone: Is there a radiation threat?

Firefighting operations are ongoing in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exclusion zone. Experts are continuously monitoring radiation levels. This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
What is burning in the Chernobyl zone
The fire broke out within the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exclusion zone in the Kyiv region. According to rescue workers, the following caught fire:
- dry grass;
- forest litter;
- brushwood and wood debris.
State Emergency Service units are continuing to extinguish the fire and douse the area. The main hotspots have already been contained, preventing the fire from spreading over large areas.
The agency did not specify the exact area affected by the fire in its initial report.
Has the background radiation level increased?
While fighting the fire, State Emergency Service specialists are continuously monitoring radiation levels in the area where operations are underway.
According to the measurement results, background radiation levels remain within established permissible limits. No exceedances have been recorded. Monitoring will continue until the fire is completely extinguished.
Does the smoke pose a threat to residents of Kyiv and the region?
The State Emergency Service’s statement makes no mention of smoke spreading to Kyiv or other populated areas. Rescue workers have also not issued any special recommendations or restrictions for the public due to this fire.
At the same time, residents should follow updates from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, local authorities, and official data from radiation monitoring systems.
If smoke appears, experts generally advise:
- close windows;
- limit time spent outdoors;
- turn on an air purifier, if available;
- stay tuned for announcements from official agencies.
These measures are primarily intended to protect against combustion byproducts, not radiation, as no elevated radiation levels have been recorded at this time.

Why Fires in the Exclusion Zone Are Causing Concern
Fires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone are under special monitoring due to radioactive contamination of the soil and vegetation following the Chernobyl disaster.
When forest litter and dry grass burn, particles of ash and dust can be released into the air. That is why, in addition to extinguishing the fires, emergency responders regularly conduct radiation measurements.
However, the mere occurrence of a fire does not automatically mean a dangerous increase in radiation levels. Conclusions about the threat are made only based on the results of instrumental monitoring, which this time did not show any exceedances.
This is not the first fire in the Chernobyl zone in July
Earlier, on July 10, rescue workers completed the extinguishing of another fire in the Chernobyl zone, which had taken about two weeks to put out.
At that time, experts also monitored radiation levels, and the spread of the fire to large areas was successfully contained.
The new fire broke out amid high fire danger. According to meteorologists, an extreme fire danger level was forecast for late July, particularly in the Kyiv and Zhytomyr regions.
