Online marriages are gaining popularity in Ukraine: one in three couples gets married remotely

Online marriage registration in Ukraine is becoming increasingly popular. In the first half of 2026, approximately one in three couples used the remote registration option, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
In the first six months of 2026, 79,516 marriages were officially registered. This was reported by the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, which released statistics on the work of civil registry offices.
The main trend this year has been the active use of online marriage registration services. According to the Ministry of Justice, over the past six months, 30,488 couples chose to register their marriage remotely, accounting for nearly 40% of all marriages registered. These statistics indicate that public services in Ukraine are gradually transitioning to a digital format, and citizens are increasingly opting for remote submission and processing of documents.
Where in Ukraine Were the Most Marriages Registered: Leading Regions by Number of Newlyweds
The highest number of marriages in the first half of 2026 was recorded in the capital. Specifically, 19,928 new families were registered in Kyiv during this period.
The leading regions also included:
- Dnipropetrovsk Oblast—15,545 marriages;
- Lviv Oblast – 8,909;
- Kyiv Oblast – 3,333;
- Odesa Oblast – 3,262.
Among the regions with a high number of registered marriages, the Ministry of Justice also highlighted Kharkiv Oblast, where 3,215 marriages were registered; Vinnytsia Oblast—2,321 marriages; Poltava Oblast—2,128 marriages; Khmelnytskyi Oblast—1,930 marriages, and Cherkasy Oblast—1,916 marriages.
The Marriage Registration Process in Ukraine: How and Where to File an Application for Marriage Registration
The Ministry of Justice has reminded the public that an application for state marriage registration can be submitted to any branch of the State Registry of Civil Status Acts. In addition, couples can use the online service and complete the entire process remotely.
The online marriage registration service is particularly useful for couples who are in different cities due to the war or who simply do not want to spend time on additional visits to government offices.
How to Register a Marriage Online: Step-by-Step Guide to Marriage Registration in “Diya”
Online marriage registration in the “Diya” app allows couples to complete the entire process remotely, without visiting the Civil Registry Office. To register your marriage online, follow these steps:
- Update the app and select the desired service. First, you need to update the “Diya” app to the latest version. After that, go to the “Services” section and select the “Online Marriage” service.
- Make a proposal in the app. One partner selects the “Make a Proposal” option and sends a link to their partner via any convenient messaging app.
- Wait for your partner’s response. After receiving the notification, your partner will have 14 days to consider the proposal. If they accept the marriage proposal, you must fill out all the necessary information for the application within 12 hours.
- Sign the marriage registration application. After you enter your information, the system will automatically generate the marriage registration application. You must sign it using “Diya.Signature.”
- Select a date for the online ceremony. The couple chooses a convenient date for the ceremony on their own. The earliest possible date is 5 days after submitting the application.
- Join the video call. On the scheduled date and time, follow the link in the “Diya” app. A Civil Registry Office employee will conduct the ceremony via video call.
- Sign the marriage certificate. After the ceremony, both partners sign the marriage certificate using “Dii.Signature.” After that, the marriage is considered officially registered.
After successful registration, the digital marriage certificate should appear among your documents in “Diya” within 24 hours. If they wish, the newlyweds can also request delivery of a paper certificate to the nearest “Ukrposhta” branch.
