Kyiv Imposes Truck Ban Due to Heat Wave: Who Is Affected by the New Rules?
3 August 14:54
Temporary restrictions on freight traffic have been imposed in Kyiv due to the hot weather. These measures are intended to preserve the road surface, which deforms more quickly at high temperatures.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing the Kyiv Patrol Police.
Who Is Prohibited from Driving
The restrictions take effect when the air temperature reaches 28°C or higher.
The following vehicles are subject to the ban:
- trucks with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 24 metric tons;
- vehicles with an axle load exceeding 7 metric tons.
Police explain that the movement of large vehicles during heat waves can lead to the destruction of the asphalt surface, the formation of ruts, and damage to roads.
Where to wait out the heat wave
Drivers are advised to wait out the period during which the restrictions are in effect at:
- special temporary parking areas;
- road shoulders;
- near roadside service facilities.
Once temperatures drop, freight traffic will resume. The Kyiv Patrol Police will issue a separate announcement regarding the lifting of the restrictions.

Why Are These Restrictions Being Imposed?
At high temperatures, asphalt concrete pavement softens, and the heavy weight of trucks significantly accelerates its deformation. That is why such restrictions are regularly imposed during the summer not only in Kyiv but also in other regions of Ukraine.
Forecasters predict that air temperatures in the capital and most regions of the country will remain high in the coming days, so drivers of heavy-duty vehicles should take potential restrictions into account when planning their routes.
