In Konotop, rescue workers are searching for people under the rubble following a Russian attack: part of the building has been destroyed

Konotop, in the Sumy region, came under a heavy attack by Russian drones. A series of explosions rocked the city, and a high-rise residential building was hit, causing three floors to collapse. A search-and-rescue operation is currently underway there, as people may be trapped under the rubble.

This was reported by Konotop Mayor Artem Semenikhin, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

According to him, there is extensive damage in the city and there are casualties, but the exact number of injured and details regarding the dead are currently being verified.

What happened in Konotop

Russian drones attacked Konotop, after which a series of explosions rocked the city. According to the mayor, one of the strikes hit a high-rise building.

In a video address, Semenikhin stated that part of the building has been destroyed and there may be people inside.

“Behind me is a high-rise building. Part of it is gone. And there are people there,” said the mayor of Konotop.

He later clarified that three floors of the building had collapsed.

“A rescue operation is underway in the high-rise building, where three floors collapsed as a result of a Russian missile strike!” — wrote Semenikhin.

There is extensive damage in the city

According to preliminary reports, numerous buildings were damaged as a result of the attack in Konotop.

The mayor reported that windows and doors have been blown out in administrative buildings, private homes, and apartments.

Also, according to him, one of the city’s museums has suffered critical damage. Semenikhin wrote that one of the museums “no longer exists,” but did not specify which museum he was referring to.

There are casualties; details are being confirmed

Semenikhin reported numerous casualties, but the exact number of people injured is currently unknown.

There is also no final information regarding fatalities yet. A rescue operation is underway at the site where the high-rise building was hit.

Konotop regularly suffers from Russian attacks

This is not the first time Konotop has come under attack by Russian drones. In late April, the Russians had already attacked the city with drones: at that time, residential buildings, administrative buildings, the central district hospital, and the tram network were damaged.

Earlier, on April 10, Russian forces also struck Konotop. At that time, reports indicated a hit on a five-story residential building in the city center, with apartments and cars damaged.
