A package exploded at a postal terminal in Kyiv: one person was killed and others were injured

On the morning of June 5, an explosion occurred at a postal operator’s sorting center in the Obolon district of Kyiv. According to preliminary data, the explosion occurred while one of the packages was being inspected. This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Kyiv, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian"
An investigative team, bomb disposal experts from the capital’s police, State Emergency Service rescuers, and medical personnel are working at the scene.
What is known about the explosion at the postal terminal
Kyiv police reported that the explosion occurred on the morning of June 5 on the premises of a postal operator’s sorting center in the Obolon district. According to preliminary information, a package being inspected by terminal employees exploded.
A 59-year-old man was killed in the incident, and two other employees, aged 37 and 41, were injured. No detailed official information regarding the condition of the injured had been released at the time of the initial reports.

Which operator is involved in the case
The police report does not name the postal operator. Media outlets speculate that it is “Nova Poshta,” citing photos from the scene, but there is no official confirmation of this detail in the police report.
Kyiv police stated that they are investigating all the circumstances of the incident.
At this time, no official information regarding the origin of the explosive device or the sender of the package has been released.
This is not the first such incident in the capital
In October 2025, an explosion occurred at the “Ukrposhta” sorting center in the Solomyanskyi district of the capital while a package was being inspected. Five people were injured in the incident: postal workers and customs service specialists.
The State Customs Service reported that the incident occurred at the “Ukrposhta” customs post of the Kyiv Customs Office during customs inspection of international postal shipments being processed for export from Ukraine.
Ihor Smilianskyi, CEO of Ukrposhta, stated that the incident occurred during procedures to inspect shipments of prohibited items. According to him, thanks to the measures taken, another package containing prohibited and dangerous items was also detected and seized.
