In Lviv, lightning struck a child’s umbrella: what is known about the child’s condition

During a severe thunderstorm on June 29 near Lviv, lightning struck a six-year-old girl. The child was hospitalized at St. Nicholas Hospital, part of Lviv’s First Medical Association. This was reported by Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

The girl is in the intensive care and anesthesiology unit. Doctors assess her condition as moderate but stable. There are no visible signs of injury on her body.

Where the lightning struck the child

According to updated information from law enforcement, the incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. in the village of Birky, near Bryukhovychi.

The girl was out in an open area with her mother when the thunderstorm began.

It has been preliminarily determined that the lightning struck the umbrella the child was holding.

The parents immediately called 103 and asked which medical facility they should go to. Medical personnel advised them to take the child immediately to the children’s hospital on Pylyp Orlyk Street in Lviv.

The family took the child to the hospital on their own

The family decided not to wait for the ambulance crew to arrive and took the girl to St. Nicholas Hospital on their own.

The child was brought to the hospital at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Hospital staff were notified in advance of the patient’s arrival. A multidisciplinary team of specialists was assembled to examine her.

What is known about the girl’s condition

After she was admitted, the child underwent the necessary examinations.

Specifically, the medical staff performed:

  • a CT scan;
  • an electrocardiogram;
  • a general clinical examination;
  • an assessment of cardiovascular function.

According to Polina Ustyianovych, an anesthesiologist at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital, the girl is in a condition of moderate severity.

Doctors found no external skin injuries. However, the child requires further observation and additional tests.

For the next 24 hours, the child will remain in the intensive care unit under constant cardiac monitoring.

Doctors will monitor:

  • heart rate;
  • heart rhythm;
  • blood pressure;
  • respiration;
  • the child’s overall condition.

Constant monitoring is necessary because the effects of an electric shock may not be immediately apparent.

A sudden storm hit Lviv

On the afternoon of June 29, following a heat wave, a powerful thunderstorm struck Lviv and the surrounding areas.

The storm was accompanied by:

  • heavy rain;
  • hail;
  • thunder and lightning;
  • gusts of wind;
  • localized flooding.

The storm caused damage to the city’s infrastructure in just a few minutes.

The building of the Shevchenkivskyi District Administration in Lviv was damaged by strong winds.

The storm tore off part of the roof and damaged the windows.

Municipal and emergency services have begun cleaning up the aftermath of the storm.

Residents were urged to stay away from damaged structures, fallen trees, and downed power lines.
