Latvia and Ukraine to Build a Drone Manufacturing Plant: Project Details

29 June 19:11

Latvia and Ukraine will jointly build a drone manufacturing plant in the Latgale region near the country’s eastern border. Authorities in Riga will do everything possible to establish the joint venture as quickly as possible, Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs told reporters, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.

According to him, representatives of the region, which borders Russia and Belarus, cite security as the most important issue for Latgale, which, without adequate security, will face a decline in tourism and other sectors.

Latvia Aims to Match Ukraine’s Level of UAV Defense

As early as July or August, a drone-countermeasure system will be deployed along the border with Russia and Belarus, which will eliminate the need to deploy aircraft for every drone-related threat, Kulbergs noted. According to him, the goal is to reach, by the end of the year, the same level of drone defense as Ukraine, which is defending itself against a full-scale invasion by Russia.

A UAV manufacturing plant will be built as part of an intergovernmental defense agreement signed with Kyiv in early June. The agreement on comprehensive cooperation in the defense sector stipulates that Ukraine will share with Latvia its experience in protecting airspace from drone attacks and its expertise, primarily in the fields of unmanned systems and air defense.
