NABU’s Allegations Against Tishchenko: What Is the MP Accused Of?

29 June 18:50

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) announced that a sitting member of the Ukrainian Parliament has been charged with soliciting an unlawful benefit, money laundering, and providing false information in his financial disclosure statement. This was reported bythe National Anti-CorruptionBureau of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The charges have been brought against MP Mykola Tishchenko.

According to NABU, in August 2023, the MP—under the guise of combating the activities of so-called “call centers”—asked an individual whom he believed to be involved in those activities for more than one million dollars in unlawful benefits, NABU notes.

“In exchange, he promised to use his authority to interfere with the operations of certain ‘call centers’ in that person’s interest and not to hinder the work of others. However, he did not receive any illicit benefits,” the statement reads.

In addition, according to investigators, the lawmaker laundered 12.6 million hryvnias of illicit origin by drawing up a fictitious gift agreement with his ex-wife.

“The investigation established that she had no legal income to make such a gift, and no actual transfer of funds took place. Subsequently, the lawmaker reported this income in his annual declaration, thereby, according to the investigation, intentionally including knowingly false information in it,” the statement reads.

The pretrial investigation is ongoing. Investigators are establishing all the circumstances of the criminal offense and identifying other individuals who may be involved in its commission.

On June 25, the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv imposed a pretrial restraint measure on Tishchenko. By court order, he must remain under round-the-clock house arrest, wear an electronic ankle monitor, and surrender his international passports.

A scandal erupted at the end of the court hearing, as Tishchenko was spotted at a five-star hotel in Kyiv after the pretrial measure was imposed.

On November 12, the Kyiv Court of Appeals extended Tishchenko’s pretrial detention in the form of round-the-clock house arrest.

On December 23, Tishchenko failed to appear at the court hearing, citing heart problems. The court did not extend the MP’s pretrial detention.
