In a truck carrying strawberries: Border guards at the “Mamalyga” checkpoint discovered a shipment of cigarettes worth nearly 20 million

1 July 15:41

At the “Mamalyga” border crossing, border guards, together with customs officials, uncovered a large-scale attempt to smuggle cigarettes across Ukraine’s state border, reports "Komersant Ukrainian", citing the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

According to the shipping documents, the vehicle was transporting fresh strawberries. However, during an inspection, officials noted a discrepancy between the vehicle’s actual weight and its declared weight—a difference of nearly 3 metric tons. This prompted an in-depth inspection using specialized scanning equipment.

“As a result of the inspection, hidden pallets of cigarettes without excise tax stamps were discovered behind the boxes of strawberries,” the statement said.

In total, approximately 360,000 packs of cigarettes were seized. The estimated value of the seized shipment is over 19 million hryvnias.
