Ukraine harvested almost 30 million tons of grain: what does the new harvest mean?

12 September 2025 15:48

Despite the war and constant attacks on infrastructure, Ukrainian farmers continue to demonstrate resilience. As of mid-September, almost 30 million tons of new crop grain have already been harvested.

This was reported by the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

This is not only a strategic resource for the country, but also a significant contribution to global food security, as Ukraine remains one of the key players in the global grain market.

62% of the area – more than 7 million hectares – has been threshed.

  • Wheat: 22.18 million tons (5 million hectares)
  • Barley: 5.29 million tons (1.34 million hectares)
  • Peas: 611.6 thousand tons (265.7 thousand hectares)
  • Corn: 192.2 thousand tons (54.1 thousand hectares)
  • Other cereals and pulses: 801.1 thou tons (291.5 thou hectares)

Odesa (3.44 mln tonnes), Vinnytsia (2.4 mln tonnes) and Kirovohrad (2.2 mln tonnes) regions remain the leaders in terms of harvest volumes.

Oilseeds

Oilseeds are being harvested in parallel:

  • rapeseed – 3.24 mln tons (1.27 mln ha),
  • soybeans – 354.3 thou tons (204.7 thou hectares),
  • sunflower – 885.3 thousand tons (570.3 thousand hectares).

Also, 155.1 thou tons of sugar beet were dug.

Corn harvesting has already started in several regions (Dnipropetrovs’k, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy and Cherkasy).

What it means

The current harvest is taking place against the backdrop of war and complicated export logistics. The Ministry of Economy predicts that the gross harvest of grains and oilseeds in 2025/26 marketing year will amount to 73.4 mln tons, which is 5% less than last year.

This figure is still significant, given the constant shelling of infrastructure and the costs of adaptation for farmers.

Why it matters

Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporters of grain and oilseeds. It directly depends on the volume of harvest:

  • global food security, especially in Africa and the Middle East,
  • foreign exchange earnings to the Ukrainian budget,
  • stability of domestic grain and flourprices.

Top 3 crops of the harvest

  • Wheat – over 22.18 mln tons from the area of 5 mln hectares. This is the main crop of the current campaign.
  • Barley5.29 mln tons from 1.34 mln hectares.
  • Peas611.6 thousand tons from 265.7 thousand hectares.

Additionally, the first volumes of corn are 192.2 thou tons, although the harvesting of this crop has just started.

Leaders among the regions

  • Odesa region – more than 3.44 mln tons from the area of 1.09 mln hectares.
  • Vinnytsia region2.4 million tons from 432.4 thousand hectares.
  • Kirovohrad region2.2 million tons from 535.5 thousand hectares.

It is worth noting that Dnipropetrovska, Zaporizka, Mykolaivska, Sumyska and Cherkaska oblasts have already started harvesting corn.

General forecast

  • In general, the gross harvest of grains and oilseeds in 2025/2026 marketing year is expected to reach 73.4 mln tonnes.
  • This is about 5% less than last year.
  • Despite the decline, the figure remains strategically important for domestic consumption and exports.

In 2022-2023, Ukraine faced a blockade of ports and Russian attacks on its grain infrastructure. The gradual recovery of maritime exports in 2024-2025 allowed farmers to integrate more actively into global markets, although risks remain high.

Despite the war and the loss of part of the sown areas, Ukraine demonstrates the ability to supply millions of tons of grain. However, the 5% decline in forecasted volumes is a reminder that the agricultural sector is working at its limits, and each next harvest depends not only on the weather but also on the stability of logistics and international support.
