Ukrainians are not afraid of migrants, but of losing their identity: Novak
2 June 16:35
The debate surrounding migrant workers in Ukraine has not only economic but also cultural roots.
Economist Andriy Novak made this statement on the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to him, most of the panic surrounding foreign workers is fueled by Russian propaganda. However, certain fears do indeed exist within Ukrainian society.
“Since there is a reaction, it means these concerns exist. But I think they relate not to competition for jobs, but to fears of losing Ukrainian authenticity,” the expert noted.
Novak explained that many Ukrainians fear the possible erosion of national culture and traditions if the number of migrants increases.
At the same time, he said, global experience shows that a large number of migrants does not necessarily lead to a loss of national identity.

He cited France as an example, where people of diverse backgrounds remain part of a single nation thanks to a strong education and integration system.
“It all starts with kindergarten and school. That is where a person and their national identity are formed,” the economist emphasized.
In his opinion, Ukraine should study this experience in order to remain a country open to the world in the future, while preserving its own identity.
