How the metro will work in Kyiv during blackouts

During the war, the Kyiv metro operates not only as a mode of transport but also as a shelter during air raids. How the popular transport of Kyiv residents works during blackouts and whether the metro will stop during massive power outages was analysed by [Kommersant].

How the subway works during the war

The Kyiv Metro Modular benches, folding chairs, blankets and mattresses are available at the stations for a comfortable stay during the air raid, provided by the staff on duty.

In addition, 19 stations have USB charging points where Kyiv residents and guests can recharge their gadgets.

Can the subway stop during a blackout?

“The subway is one of the most complex engineering systems. In particular, the company’s power supply scheme is designed in such a way that it provides for the backup of power supply to consumers, including rolling stock, in the event of a blackout at some substations,” the transport company’s press service explained to journalists.

In the event of a complete power outage, the underground metro stations will operate as shelters.

How the subway is currently working in Kyiv

Over the past week, the company has Kyiv Metro is also facing a tense staffing situation: the company has more than 15% of vacant positions. The company is most in need of such specialists as a locksmith, a turner, an electric train driver, a milling machine operator, and an electrician. The technical school is currently training future train drivers, with one woman among the students. This group will complete their training and start working on the line at the end of this year.

In addition, the train schedule has changed slightly since 3 June. Thus, during peak hours, the intervals between trains are approximately 3-4 minutes, and off-peak hours are 6:00-6:30 minutes. Weekend intervals remain unchanged, with train waiting times of 6-7 minutes. Please note that trains run on the blue line between the stations Heroyiv Dnipra and Lybidska, and shuttle trains run between the stations Teremky and Demiivska at intervals of 13 and 17 minutes, depending on the direction of travel.
