Price volatility looms: the apple market is operating without an accurate assessment of inventory levels

The Ukrainian apple market is entering the final phase of the season without a clear understanding of the volume of remaining stock in storage facilities, which increases the risk of price fluctuations. This was reported in an article in the magazine “Ukrainian Horticulture” by Ksenia Guseva, a fruit and vegetable market expert at the IA “APK-Inform, and Volodymyr Gurzhiy, head of the fruit export company USPA Fruit, according to "Komersant Ukrainian" citing AgroTimes.

According to their estimates, the available information on stocks is fragmentary, which complicates market forecasting.

“There is currently no reliable picture of the remaining stock,” the authors note.

Under these conditions, market participants are forced to act largely at random: some producers are trying to sell their products quickly, while others are stretching out sales until the end of the season. Both strategies carry risks—either price losses or a decline in quality.

If the available volumes cannot be distributed evenly over time, the market may physically be unable to absorb them, even at current price levels. This sets the stage for a sharp correction at the end of the season.
