June 1 is no longer Children’s Day in Ukraine: which holidays remain
1 June 11:55
June 1 is traditionally associated worldwide with childhood, family, and caring for children. In many countries, International Children’s Day is still celebrated on this date. However, in Ukraine, the official date of Children’s Day has changed as of 2025: it is now celebrated not on June 1, but on November 20—World Children’s Day, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
Despite this, June 1 remains an important date on the international calendar. It is on this day that the UN observes World Parents’ Day, and World Milk Day is also celebrated globally, drawing attention to the role of the dairy industry, nutrition, and food security.
Why June 1 is no longer the official Children’s Day in Ukraine
Until 2025, Ukraine celebrated Children’s Day on June 1 every year. However, on May 30, 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 355/2025, establishing a new date—November 20.
According to the document, Children’s Day in Ukraine is now celebrated annually on Universal Children’s Day. At the same time, the 1998 decree, which established June 1 as the date, has been repealed.

The reason for the date change is the desire to align the Ukrainian holiday with an international human rights date. It was on November 20 that the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
This means that June 1 is no longer the official date for Children’s Day in Ukraine. However, this date remains recognizable to many Ukrainians, as for decades, children’s events, charity drives, concerts, flash mobs, and educational campaigns were held on June 1.
International Children’s Day
June 1 continues to be celebrated as International Children’s Day in many countries around the world. This holiday is historically linked to the idea of drawing attention to children’s rights, safety, education, health, social protection, and adults’ responsibility for children’s futures.
For Ukraine, this topic is particularly sensitive due to the war. Issues of child safety, evacuation, access to education, psychological support, the return of deported children, and the protection of minors’ rights remain among the most critical social challenges.
Even after the official date was moved to November 20, June 1 can still serve as an occasion to discuss childhood, assistance to families, support for children affected by the war, and the responsibility of the state and society.

World Parents’ Day
Another important date on June 1 is World Parents’ Day. It was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2012 to honor parents around the world every year and recognize their role in raising children.
This day serves as a reminder that the family is the first and most important environment for a child’s development. It is parents who provide care, support, safety, emotional connection, and the first life guidelines.
In the context of war, this date holds special significance for Ukrainian families. Many parents are raising children under difficult conditions—evacuation, separation, loss of home, a family member serving in the military, or being forced to live abroad.
World Milk Day
June 1 also marks World Milk Day. This date was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to highlight the importance of milk as a global food product and draw attention to the role of the dairy industry.
The official World Milk Day website notes that this date brings together countries, organizations, and communities every year to discuss dairy products and their role in nutrition, agriculture, economic development, and food security.
This date is also relevant for Ukraine, as the dairy industry remains an important part of the agricultural sector.
At the same time, due to the war, producers are facing challenges: rising costs of feed, energy, and logistics, as well as marketing issues and a reduction in livestock numbers in some regions.
Is June 1 a public holiday in Ukraine
June 1 is not a public holiday in Ukraine. If this date falls on a workday, institutions, enterprises, and organizations operate as usual.
Martial law has been in effect in Ukraine for five years now. As a result, all public holidays are canceled.
If the President of Ukraine extends martial law until the end of November, then Children’s Day, which falls on a Friday in 2026, will be a regular workday for those working a standard schedule.
