27th blackout at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant: Energoatom Warns of Risks to Nuclear and Radiation Safety

The 27th blackout occurred overnight on August 20 at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The plant is operating on diesel generators, according to NAEK “Energoatom,” as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
“The temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP lost its external power supply for the fifteenth time this year: backup diesel generators automatically kicked in to ensure the operation of critically important safety systems,” the statement said.
As Energoatom CEO Pavlo Kovtonyuk emphasized, regular blackouts at the ZNPP lead to equipment wear and tear and increase safety risks. According to him, the frequent activation of diesel generators causes equipment to degrade more rapidly.
The company noted that yet another blackout confirms once again that the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP remains fragile.
Risks to nuclear and radiation safety are intensifying under the influence of incompetent Russian “managers.”
At the same time, the company emphasized that the only guarantee of the plant’s safe operation remains its de-occupation and return to the full control of Ukraine and its sole legitimate operator—JSC “NAEK ‘Energoatom’.”

Recent blackouts at the Zaporizhzhia NPP
As a reminder, on August 4, the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is under Russian occupation, lost its external power supply. Power was restored nearly an hour later.
A similar situation occurred just a few days earlier—on August 1. This marks the second instance of a loss of external power at the ZNPP within a short period.
It should be noted that since the seizure of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, Russian military forces have been using the plant’s territory for military purposes.
According to Ukrainian sources, weapons and equipment are being stored at the facility, and attack drones are being launched from there, posing additional risks to nuclear safety.
