900,000 books lost: BookChef publishing house reports on the aftermath of the attack

The Russian army continues to strike not only at civilian infrastructure but also at Ukrainian culture. Following yet another nighttime attack, the BookChef publishing house’s reserve warehouse—where books rescued from a previous shelling had been stored—was completely destroyed.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing an official statement from the publishing house.
Russia Destroyed BookChef’s Reserve Warehouse
According to the publishing house, a missile struck the reserve warehouse, which was operated by its logistics partner, Denka Logistics.
This warehouse had been set up after the central logistics complex was destroyed during a previous Russian attack.
“The fire destroyed more than 100,000 additional books belonging to BookChef,” the company said.
Total losses have reached 900,000 books
BookChef notes that following two Russian attacks, the total number of destroyed books has reached 900,000 copies.
Among the lost publications are:
- new releases that had only recently arrived from the printing presses;
- books that were scheduled to arrive at bookstores in the near future;
- the publisher’s entire warehouse inventory.
In fact, following the second strike, the company lost its entire stock of printed materials.
Will there be delays with books?
The publishing house reported that damage assessment is currently underway.
Future book delivery schedules will depend on:
- the launch of new warehouse facilities;
- the reprinting of certain titles;
- the restoration of logistics.
It is possible that some popular books may temporarily be out of stock.
This is the second blow to the book industry in just a few days
This latest incident has dealt yet another major blow to the Ukrainian publishing industry.
As a reminder, on August 1, as a result of a Russian attack on a logistics center in Kharkiv, approximately 8 million books were destroyed, a significant portion of which were school textbooks.
Experts emphasize that such attacks not only have economic consequences but also cause serious damage to Ukraine’s cultural and educational sectors.
The publishing house promises to resume operations
Despite the loss of its entire inventory, BookChef stated that it is working to resume operations.
The publishing house’s team plans to rebuild its logistics infrastructure, organize the reprinting of its most popular books, and provide readers with new print runs once new warehouse facilities are up and running.
