The Night of the Massive Strike: What Is Known About the Shelling of Ukraine as of This Morning

On the night of June 15, Russia launched one of its most massive combined strikes against Ukraine, using various types of missiles and hundreds of attack drones. Kyiv was the main target of the attack. Dnipro and Kharkiv were also hit by missile strikes. "Komersant Ukrainian" has compiled all available information on the Russian attacks as of this morning.

According to the Air Force, electronic warfare units recorded a total of 681 aerial attack vehicles—70 missiles and 611 drones of various types. The air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile forces, electronic warfare units, unmanned systems, and mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces.

How many missiles and drones did Russia use?

Russia used various types of weapons in the nighttime attack. According to preliminary data, these include:

  • 6 3M22 “Zircon” anti-ship missiles;
  • 34 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles;
  • 30 X-101/Iskander-K cruise missiles;
  • 611 Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas attack UAVs, Banderol loitering munitions, and Parody decoy drones.

The launches were carried out from Russian territory and the temporarily occupied Crimea.

How the air defense performed

As of 08:00, according to preliminary data, Ukrainian air defense shot down or suppressed 632 aerial targets.

Among them:

  • 5 3M22 “Zircon” missiles;
  • 15 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles;
  • 30 Kh-101/Iskander-K cruise missiles;
  • 582 drones of various types.

At the same time, 20 ballistic missiles and 27 strike UAVs were recorded hitting 42 locations. Debris from downed drones also fell at 12 locations.

Kyiv: the main target

Kyiv bore the brunt of the attack last night. Attacks were recorded in several districts of the capital, including Obolon, Shevchenkivskyi, Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, and Holosiivskyi.

According to preliminary data, four people were killed in Kyiv, and another 23 were injured, including a child. Fires broke out in the city, and residential buildings, civilian infrastructure, stores, warehouses, and vehicles were damaged.

Damage to cultural heritage sites was also reported, particularly on the grounds of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

The State Emergency Service provided more details on the consequences of the attack.

Obolon District: As a result of the strikes, 30 vehicles caught fire, warehouse fires broke out, and damage to residential buildings, including shattered windows and doors, was recorded. In one of the apartment buildings, a fire broke out and caused damage between the 3rd and 4th floors. A strike on a 9-story residential building was also recorded, followed by a second strike.

Two casualties were identified and handed over to medical personnel.

Podilskyi District: Strikes caused fires in a private home and an apartment building.

Pecherskyi District: Hits on residential buildings were recorded, followed by fires. A fire broke out on the roof of one of the capital’s churches, covering an area of 800 square meters.

Solomyanskyi District: a 9-story residential building was hit, causing fires on the 5th and 6th floors.

Twelve people were rescued, including three children.

Holosiivskyi District: Fires broke out in a warehouse building; a strike on a critical infrastructure facility was recorded.

Shevchenkivskyi District: strikes on a non-residential building, residential buildings, and commercial facilities. Three people were rescued from a 25-story residential building; one more person was freed from an elevator and handed over to medics with burns. The fire has been contained.

Dniprovskyi District: A private residential building was reportedly damaged.

Desnianskyi District: a fire broke out on the grounds of an educational institution.

Darnitskyi District: falling debris followed by a fire.

Svyatoshynsky District: damage to residential buildings was reported, with no subsequent fire.

The State Emergency Service added that rescue workers and all relevant services are on the scene.

Strike on the Dovzhenko Film Studio

The Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio in Kyiv—one of Ukraine’s oldest film institutions—was damaged during the massive attack.

According to Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna, the attack caused a fire that destroyed the costume workshop and a unique collection.

“Another extremely grave crime by the Russians against Ukrainian culture. Russia attacked the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio in Kyiv—one of Ukraine’s oldest film studios. A fire broke out,” Berezhna wrote.

According to her, Russia destroyed the film studio’s costume workshop and its unique collection: about 100,000 costumes and three million pieces of various clothing.

Other buildings and structures on the film studio’s grounds were also damaged. Rescue and emergency services were on the scene.

Kharkiv: State Emergency Service rescuers killed

In Kharkiv, a Russian attack led to a tragedy among State Emergency Service (SES) workers. Rescuers were extinguishing a fire following one of the strikes when Russia launched a second strike.

According to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, five State Emergency Service (SES) rescuers were killed. At least five other service employees were injured.

Four civilians were also injured in Kharkiv in the Kholodnohirskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts. Information on the extent of the damage is being clarified.

Dnipro: Educational and Cultural Facilities Damaged

One person was injured in Dnipro as a result of the Russian attack. According to preliminary data, a college, a school, and the House of Organ and Chamber Music were damaged.

Rescue services and local authorities are continuing to assess the extent of the damage.

Sumy: Drones struck the city center

In Sumy, three people, including a child, were injured as a result of an attack by Russian drones.

One of the UAVs attacked the city center. A non-residential building was damaged as a result of the strike.

Kyiv Region: There are wounded, including a child

In the Kyiv region, three people are known to have been injured following a nighttime attack. Among the victims is a child born in 2011.

The Brovary, Vyshhorod, Bucha, Fastiv, and Boryspil districts were targeted. Communities are reporting damage caused by the strikes and falling debris.

In the Brovary district, debris caught fire on the grounds of a warehouse complex.

In the Vyshhorod district, debris was reported to have fallen on the grounds of a private residence.

In the Bucha district, a fire broke out in a warehouse building covering an area of over 1,000 square meters.

In the Fastiv and Boryspil districts, fires broke out in private residential buildings and a passenger car.

Why this attack was one of the largest

The nighttime attack on June 15 was a combined operation: Russia simultaneously deployed ballistic, cruise, and anti-ship missiles, as well as hundreds of drones of various types. This tactic is aimed at overloading Ukraine’s air defense system and damaging civilian infrastructure in various regions.

The main strike hit Kyiv, but damage was also reported in Kharkiv, Dnipro, Sumy, and the Kyiv region.

Advice for Ukrainians

Ukrainians are urged not to ignore air raid sirens, to remain in shelters until the official all-clear is given, and to stay away from strike sites or areas where debris has fallen.

Also, do not post photos or videos of air defense operations, strike sites, or the aftermath of attacks before official reports are released. This could help the enemy adjust future strikes.
