As a result of the Russian attack on Kyiv on the night of June 15, Ukraine’s largest and oldest costume collection was completely destroyed at the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio, said the studio’s general director, Andriy Donchik, on the program “Breakfast with 1 + 1.” This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to “Interfax-Ukraine.”
“This is a unique collection, and it has been completely destroyed. Cossack costumes, Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s clothing, and numerous historical artifacts are gone. All of this was stored right here,” Donchik said.
According to him, among the lost exhibits are historical costumes used during the filming of iconic Ukrainian films, including “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors,” as well as Cossack clothing, costumes of historical figures, and other unique artifacts.

At the same time, the film studio hopes that the unique film archive, which houses about 600 films—some of which exist in only a single copy—has survived.
Strike on the Dovzhenko Film Studio
The Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio in Kyiv—one of Ukraine’s oldest film institutions—was damaged during the massive attack.
According to Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna, the attack caused a fire that destroyed the costume workshop and a unique collection.
“The costume workshop was damaged by the strike. Ukraine’s largest and oldest costume collection was destroyed. The studio housed about 100,000 costumes and three million pieces of various clothing. Other buildings and structures at the film studio were also damaged,” Berezhna said.
According to her, Russia continues to deliberately target not only civilian infrastructure but also cultural institutions that preserve Ukrainian identity, memory, and history.
