Budapest has lodged a protest with Moscow: the Russian ambassador was summoned over the attack on Transcarpathia

13 May 22:48

For the first time since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador over the attack on the Zakarpattia region. This was reported by HVG, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

The decision was made following Russia’s massive strike on Ukraine on May 13, during which facilities in the western part of the country were damaged. The Hungarian government stated that it strongly condemns the attack on Transcarpathia.

Why Hungary summoned the Russian ambassador

The reason for the diplomatic protest was the Russian attack on the Zakarpattia region. This is a region in western Ukraine where a Hungarian ethnic minority also resides.

Péter Magyar stated that the Hungarian government strongly condemns the Russian attack on Transcarpathia.

According to him, Foreign Minister Anita Orbán will convey this position to the Russian ambassador and demand an explanation as to when Russia and Vladimir Putin plan to end the war against Ukraine.

What is known about the attack on Zakarpattia

On May 13, Russia launched a massive airstrike on Ukraine. According to Reuters, the strike targeted, in particular, western regions near the borders of NATO countries.

The attack was one of the largest to hit Zakarpattia since the start of the full-scale war.

According to reports from Ukrainian and Hungarian media, critical infrastructure was damaged as a result of the strikes. In particular, damage was reported to a transformer, a railway station in Svalyava, and an industrial facility in Uzhhorod.

Why this decision is being called unprecedented

Hungarian media note that this is the first time Budapest has summoned the Russian ambassador specifically over shelling in Transcarpathia since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Former Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó did not summon the Russian ambassador following Russia’s attacks on Transcarpathia, a move that had previously drawn criticism from independent Hungarian media.
