An outbreak of norovirus has been detected on a cruise ship in France: what we know
14 May 04:40
An outbreak of norovirus has been reported on the cruise ship Ambition in France. The ship docked in Bordeaux, and French health authorities have temporarily restricted the disembarkation of passengers and crew. There are over 1,700 people on board, and symptoms of acute gastrointestinal illness have been detected in approximately 50 people. The Guardian reports this, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
According to French medical officials, test results confirmed norovirus, which can spread rapidly in enclosed spaces, particularly on cruise ships.
What happened on the Ambition
The cruise ship Ambition, owned by Ambassador Cruise Line, arrived in Bordeaux after cases of gastroenteritis began to be reported on board.
According to Reuters, there are 1,233 passengers and 514 crew members on board. Most of the passengers are citizens of the United Kingdom and Ireland.
French authorities have implemented health measures: the sick have been isolated in their cabins, medical personnel have been sent to the ship to collect samples, and passenger disembarkation has been temporarily restricted.
How many people have fallen ill
According to French officials, symptoms of norovirus or acute gastroenteritis were detected in approximately 50 people.
The patients exhibited typical symptoms of a gastrointestinal infection.
According to French health authorities, no serious cases have been reported so far.
What is known about the passenger’s death
A 92-year-old British passenger died during the cruise.
The operator, Ambassador Cruise Line, reported that the man did not report any symptoms of a gastrointestinal illness.
According to Reuters, French authorities indicate that the death is likely unrelated to the norovirus outbreak.
The exact cause of death is to be determined by the relevant authorities.
Where the outbreak may have started
The ship departed from Belfast on May 8 and arrived in Liverpool the following day. According to the operator, the number of cases began to rise after passengers boarded in Liverpool.
French medical experts note that norovirus can be transmitted from person to person or through contaminated surfaces. That is why hygiene measures and the isolation of sick passengers have been stepped up on the ship.

What is norovirus
Norovirus is a common virus that causes acute gastroenteritis. It is often called “stomach flu,” although it is not directly related to the flu.
Typical symptoms:
- nausea;
- vomiting;
- diarrhea;
- abdominal pain;
- fever;
- weakness.
For most people, the illness goes away in a few days, but dehydration can be dangerous for older adults, young children, and people with chronic health conditions.
Why Outbreaks Often Occur on Cruises
Cruise ships are environments where infections can spread quickly. People are in a confined space, sharing restaurants, elevators, hallways, and common areas.
Norovirus is highly contagious and can survive on surfaces, so even a small outbreak requires rapid public health measures: isolating the sick, disinfecting, limiting contact, and monitoring food service.
Is this case linked to the hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius?
French authorities have specifically emphasized that the outbreak on the Ambition is not linked to the recent hantavirus case on another cruise ship—the MV Hondius. That incident caused international concern, but it involves a different virus and a different situation.
Norovirus usually causes acute gastrointestinal symptoms, whereas hantavirus can have a different course and sources of transmission.
Will the ship continue its voyage?
According to The Times, after the norovirus was confirmed and sanitary measures were implemented, the ship was allowed to continue its voyage to Spain. Passengers without symptoms began to be gradually allowed to disembark, provided they followed medical recommendations.
Stricter hygiene and isolation rules remain in place on board for those with symptoms.
