Ukraine is discussing a new approach to reinstating military personnel who have left their units without authorization.

This was announced on the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian" by MP Ruslan Gorbenko, citing an initiative by Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

According to him, the possibility of signing new contracts under an updated pay system—for 10 months, 14 months, or two years—is being considered.

After fulfilling their contract, servicemen may receive a deferment from mobilization, as well as additional bonuses depending on the number of days spent on combat missions.

“I think this initiative will encourage a certain percentage of the guys who deserted to sign contracts in order to avoid criminal liability,” Gorbenko noted.

The deputy also highlighted another potential source of military personnel: former law enforcement officers and military personnel who are already receiving a pension for length of service but have not yet reached retirement age. According to him, there are about 137,000 such people in Ukraine.
