For the second year in a row: Russia has been named “the least peace-loving country in the world”

13 June 21:15

For the second year in a row, Russia ranked last, in 163rd place, in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI) compiled by the Australian Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). According to the report, Russia remains “the least peaceful country in the world.” Other bottom-ranked countries include Sudan (162nd place), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (161st), Ukraine (160th), and Israel (159th), reports "Komersant Ukrainian".

The key factors behind this ranking for Russia remain high levels of militarization and involvement in war. The Militarization score worsened by 5.8% over the year, and the country’s military spending, according to IEP estimates, reached about $190 billion last year—that is more than 7% of GDP and nearly a fifth of the federal budget.

In 2025, Russia ranked last in the index for the first time, and at that time, IEP experts warned that without an end to the war, Moscow and Kyiv risked becoming permanently entrenched among the least peaceful countries. These predictions have come true: over the past year, Ukraine has risen by only one position—from 161st to 160th—while Russia remained in 163rd place.

The overall global situation is also deteriorating. Of the 23 indicators of peacefulness, 14 showed negative trends. Global military spending reached a record $2.9 trillion, equivalent to 2.5% of global GDP.

Western and Central Europe remain the most peaceful regions.
