DTEK to Build a Wind Farm in Poltava Oblast

Businessman Rinat Akhmetov’s DTEK Group plans to build Europe’s largest wind farm in the Poltava region, with a capacity of 650 MW and a total cost of 1.2 billion euros. This was reported by the company’s press service, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The plant will be built in the Poltava region and will consist of approximately 100 wind turbines, DTEK notes.

“The new wind farm will help strengthen the country’s energy security. It will also compensate for capacity lost due to enemy attacks,” the statement said.

The Poltava wind farm has a capacity of 650 MW, which significantly exceeds the 500 MW capacity of the Tiligul wind farm.

DTEK signed an agreement with wind turbine manufacturer Vestas regarding its completion back in January 2025. In late June 2024, the DTEK RES Group received technical specifications for connecting the Poltava Wind Farm to the power grid, which is a crucial step in designing the substation to collect power from the future plant.

DTEK also received a grant from the Norwegian Agency for Development and Cooperation (Norad) in the amount of 5.5 million Norwegian kroner (487,000 euros) for the implementation of the Poltava WPP project, which will become the largest wind power generation facility in Ukraine and Europe.

The DTEK Group is the largest private investor in Ukraine’s energy sector, with 55,000 employees and over 12 billion euros in capital invested since 2005.

The holding’s companies generate electricity at wind, solar, and thermal power plants; distribute and supply electricity to end consumers; extract natural gas and coal; trade in energy resources on Ukrainian and foreign markets; and provide energy services to households and businesses.

The DTEK Group is wholly owned by SCM Holdings. The ultimate beneficiary and sole shareholder is businessman Rinat Akhmetov.

During the war, DTEK commissioned 114 MW of new wind capacity at the Tiligul Wind Farm in southern Ukraine and is currently building an additional 384 MW, bringing the total investment in this project to €650 million.

The company has also launched a 200 MW energy storage system —the largest in Ukraine—and is implementing a number of other projects in the renewable energy sector.
