The death toll from Russia’s massive attack on Kyiv has risen: what is known as of 5 a.m.

On the night of July 2, Russian forces launched a massive combined attack on Kyiv, using strike drones and missiles. After several waves of drones, a new phase of the attack began around 2 a.m., involving the use of missiles. Explosions were heard in various parts of the capital, and air defense forces were active. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on his Telegram channel about the consequences of Russia’s missile and drone attack on the capital, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

As of 5:10 a.m., Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, reported two fatalities and 20 injured.

The effects of the Russian shelling were recorded at at least 28 locations in various parts of Kyiv. Residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were primarily damaged.

How many people were killed and injured

According to updated information from the Kyiv City Military Administration, as of 5:10 a.m., the following was known:

  • two fatalities;
  • 20 injured;
  • at least 28 damaged locations;
  • destruction of residential and non-residential buildings;
  • fires in several districts;
  • damage to a medical facility and an ambulance substation.

The number of casualties gradually increased throughout the night as rescue workers continued to search damaged buildings and clear debris.

28 locations damaged in Kyiv

According to Timur Tkachenko, the effects of the Russian attack were evident throughout the city.

“Currently, we know of 28 locations throughout the city that were damaged by the shelling. These are primarily residential buildings and civilian infrastructure facilities,” said the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration.

The following teams were working on-site:

  • rescue workers;
  • medical personnel;
  • police officers;
  • utility services;
  • emergency response teams;
  • representatives of district administrations.

The final number of damaged facilities may change once the city survey is complete.

Russia attacked Kyiv in several stages

Russian troops carried out the first phase of the attack using strike drones.

The drones approached the capital from various directions, changed their routes, and attacked in several waves.

Around 2:00 a.m., Russia moved to a new phase of its combined strike and deployed missiles.

The Air Force reported the launches and movement of “Kalibr” cruise missiles.

Official air target warnings were published by the Ukrainian Air Force.

According to monitoring channels, ballistic missiles and “Zircon” missiles were launched from the Bryansk and Kursk regions. The Air Force confirmed the launch of “Kalibr” missiles.

An emergency medical substation was damaged

In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a building housing one of the emergency medical care substations was damaged as a result of the attack.

Five people were injured—medical workers and drivers at the substation.

One of the injured paramedics was in extremely critical condition.

A medical facility was damaged in the Shevchenkivskyi district

In addition to the ambulance substation, damage to a medical facility was reported in the Shevchenkivskyi district.

According to city authorities, medical workers were among those affected.

Also in the district:

  • a fire broke out at the market;
  • non-residential buildings were damaged;
  • damage was reported due to falling debris and impacts;
  • rescue and medical teams were on the scene.

Rescue workers checked buildings for people and extinguished fires.

Part of a building was destroyed in the Desnianskyi district

Partial destruction of a high-rise residential building was reported in the Desnianskyi district.

City authorities reported that people might still be trapped inside the building.

Rescue workers conducted search operations, cleared debris, and helped residents evacuate dangerous areas.

Floors of a building destroyed in the Darnytskyi district

In the Darnytskyi district, a residential building caught fire and was partially destroyed as a result of the attack.

According to preliminary information from Vitali Klitschko, the damage affected floors one through six.

Emergency services:

  • evacuated people;
  • inspected the apartments;
  • put out the fire;
  • inspected load-bearing structures;
  • provided assistance to the victims.

Residents of the damaged building may have needed temporary housing and assistance from city services.

A fire broke out in the Holosiivskyi district

A fire was reported on the roof of a building in the Holosiivskyi district.

Rescue workers worked to contain the blaze and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.

Information regarding the exact extent of the damage was being clarified.

Falling debris from downed drones and missiles can cause fires even without directly hitting a building.

A hotel caught fire in the Shevchenkivskyi district

Following the first wave of the drone attack in the Shevchenkivskyi district, a fire broke out in a hotel building.

State Emergency Service units were on the scene.

Information regarding the number of people inside and the extent of the damage was being verified.

Other civilian facilities in the same district were damaged, including medical infrastructure and a market.

Russia continued to launch drones after the missile strikes

Following the missile phase of the attack, Russian forces continued to direct attack drones toward the capital.

As of 5:24 a.m., the danger persisted.

Kyiv residents were urged:

  • not to leave their shelters until the official all-clear;
  • not to stand near windows;
  • not to photograph air defense operations;
  • not to post real-time locations of strikes;
  • not to approach debris.

Attacks in several waves can last for many hours with brief pauses.

Zelenskyy warned in advance of a possible strike

On the evening of July 1, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that intelligence had revealed Russia was preparing a massive attack.

Due to the threat, he cut short his visit to Ireland and returned to Ukraine.

The president urged citizens to pay particular attention to air raid alerts on the night of July 1.

WOG closed gas stations in Kyiv and the surrounding region

Due to reports of a possible large-scale attack, the WOG network decided to temporarily suspend operations at its gas stations in Kyiv and the Kyiv region.

The gas stations were closed from 11:00 p.m. on July 1 until 7:00 a.m. on July 2.

The company explained the decision as necessary to protect staff and customers.

The day before, Russian troops attacked five gas stations in the Dnipropetrovsk region, killing one employee and injuring several others.
