Martial law, which was extended by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decree until May 9, 2025, will not be lifted after that date, even if elections are involved. This statement was made was made by andriy Yusov, a spokesman for the Main Intelligence Directorate, reports [Komersant].

“There is no need to wait (for the lifting of martial law – ed.). We should work hard on this. And such work is underway, and the Ukrainian political and military leadership, Ukrainian diplomats, including the public sector, cultural diplomacy, and non-governmental organizations are actively working on this. And yes, our partners are also working,” Yusov said.

In this way, the DIU spokesman commented on statements by some MPs that martial law would be lifted in May in view of the possible holding of elections.

Yusov also said that “important events” are expected in Ukraine in the near future, which will bring “good news” – “both the Munich conference and not only.”

The GUR representative added that the actual decision on martial law will depend on the security situation in the country, not on political speculation.

War in Ukraine: current situation

Since the beginning of 2025, the situation at the front in Ukraine has undergone significant changes. Russian troops have stepped up their offensive, especially in Donbas, which has led to the loss of some settlements. These events were the result of intense attacks by enemy infantry.

In response to these threats, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are strengthening their defense and mobilizing additional resources. However, problems with mobilization and cases of CBRN complicate the process of replenishment. The tactical actions of Russian troops, despite their limited effectiveness in other regions, are forcing the Ukrainian Armed Forces to retreat in some areas of the front.

In addition, the Russian army continues to receive military support from North Korea, which helps to strengthen its combat capabilities. However, the possibility of turning these tactical successes into a strategic advantage remains uncertain.

It is also worth noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not expect a shortage of weapons in the short term, which indicates the enemy’s intention to continue fighting in Ukraine.
