Due to Russian attacks, Naftogaz has lost part of its gas production: how the shortfall will be offset
6 May 14:37
Russia’s massive combined attack on May 5 against gas production facilities belonging to the Naftogaz Group resulted in serious damage and a temporary loss of part of the company’s domestic gas production. The company stated that the shortfall would be offset by imports, as was done last year. This was announced by Serhiy Koretskyi, chairman of the board of Naftogaz of Ukraine, during the “Yedyni Novyny” telethon, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
According to him, Russian strikes in recent days have been directed primarily at gas production infrastructure.
What happened to Naftogaz’s facilities
Russia carried out a massive combined attack on the gas production facilities of the Naftogaz group. As a result of the strikes, part of the infrastructure sustained significant damage, which affected the company’s own gas production volumes.
Serhiy Koretsky confirmed that the company has suffered gas losses, but emphasized that they are temporary and that the damaged facilities will be restored.
“Unfortunately, the missile strikes caused serious destruction… Of course, there are gas losses. Of course, we will make up for them and restore everything. We will restore everything and get everything back up and running. We will compensate for the temporary losses in our own production, just as we did last year, with imported volumes,” Koretsky said.
How many attacks has Russia carried out against Naftogaz?
According to the chairman of Naftogaz’s board, since the beginning of 2026, Russia has carried out 107 massive combined attacks on the group’s facilities.
The main focus has been on gas production. The latest series of attacks has been ongoing for five consecutive days.
This indicates a deliberate attempt by Russia to damage Ukraine’s critically important energy infrastructure and complicate gas supply to consumers.
Losses will be covered by imports
Due to the temporary loss of part of its own production, Naftogaz must secure additional gas imports. This approach was already used last year, when Russian attacks also damaged energy infrastructure.
Imports are intended to compensate for the shortfall while the company’s specialists repair the damaged facilities and stabilize production processes.
When gas supply to consumers will resume
Koretsky also reported that the company plans to restore gas supply in the near future to customers who were left without gas due to the Russian attack.
About 3,500 customers may be without gas. The company is working to restore gas supply after assessing the damage and carrying out the necessary repairs.
Naftogaz employees and rescue workers killed
Three Naftogaz employees and two State Emergency Service workers were killed in the attack. According to Koretsky, they returned to the facility after the air raid alert ended to minimize the consequences of the previous strike, but Russia launched a second strike with ballistic missiles.
Most of the wounded are in hospitals, and some have already been discharged.
Naftogaz released the names of the three employees who died: Oleksandr Kozin, Yuriy Musienko, and Mykhailo Dub.
Oleksandr Kozin headed the condensate stabilization process shop. He repeatedly participated in the cleanup efforts following Russian attacks. For his courage during previous restoration work, he was awarded the Order of Merit, 3rd Class, by the President of Ukraine. He is survived by a minor son.
Yuriy Musienko worked as a process pump operator. His work was critical to maintaining process stability, which could not be interrupted even during the most challenging moments.
Mykhailo Dub was a shift engineer in the gas condensate and oil processing department. The company noted that the safe and uninterrupted operation of production depended on his decisions.
