During the full-scale war, Ukraine’s needs for professionals have changed significantly. Speaking to Ukrainian Radio, Deputy Minister of Education and Science Mykhailo Vynnytskyi outlined who the country needs most now and how the government is encouraging young people to enter key specialties.

“Doctors, teachers, rehabilitation therapists, and psychologists are extremely important,” Vynnytskyi emphasized.

According to him, the state is primarily interested in specialists who work with people. That is why medical and educational professions, as well as areas related to mental health, are strategically important.

“Doctors, teachers, and rehabilitation therapists are three specialties that are extremely important. I can add a fourth – psychology. The first three specialties are difficult to study, they have high thresholds, but we are trying to encourage people,” the deputy minister said.

In addition to the humanitarian field, the Ministry of Education sees critical importance in the development of infrastructure and engineering:

“In addition to human capital, infrastructure is important. Therefore, everything related to architecture, construction, various engineering specialties, energy, motor vehicles, aviation, unmanned engineering is very important,” explained Vynnytskyi.

According to the deputy minister, the Ministry of Education and Science is actively working to attract applicants to these specialties by offering more state-funded places and grants for contract students.

“There are more state-funded places in these specialties and there are opportunities to get a grant for contract students,” explained Vynnytsky.

According to him, a significant problem is the low interest in fundamental specialties such as physics, chemistry, biology, geodesy, ecology and land management.

“Unfortunately, we have a relatively small number of applicants for fundamental specialties – physics, chemistry, biology, geodesy, ecology, land management, etc. – and the labor market needs are great,” he stated.

In the context of the war and post-war reconstruction of the country, these specialties can become the basis for building a new, strong Ukraine. The Ministry calls on young people to make a balanced approach to choosing a profession, as it will affect not only their personal future but also the restoration of the state.
