Mike Johnson wants to become Speaker of the House again

House Republicans have re-nominated Mike Johnson for speaker of the House in the upcoming 119th U.S. Congress. The Hill reports this with reference to sources, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs.

Mike Johnson had no competitors during the nomination and won the nomination for speaker unanimously.

The decisive vote in the House of Representatives will take place on January 3, when Mike Johnson will need to get the support of the majority in the House to retain his leadership position. And this, as the newspaper notes, will be much more difficult to do, given the meager advantage that Republicans have in the House.

Shortly before Wednesday’s vote, Johnson enlisted the support of President-elect Trump, which was a serious argument in favor of his candidacy. During a meeting with Republicans in the House of Representatives on Wednesday morning, Trump called Johnson a “good guy” and said that “I’m with him all the way.”

But Johnson nevertheless faces a tough road in January. Hardline conservatives among the Republicans have been highly critical of Johnson’s previous decisions and overall stance on providing aid to Ukraine and funding the government.

Mike Johnson and relations with Ukraine

In April 2024, after several months of delays due to various reasons, Mike Johnson finally submitted a package of projects to the House of Representatives that included support for Ukraine. The House then voted to allocate aid to Ukraine.

In September, US Speaker of the House Mike Johnson demanded the dismissal of Ukraine’s Ambassador to the US Oksana Markarova over Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant in Pennsylvania.

on October 11, in an interview with the US media outlet Punchbowl News, Speaker Mike Johnson said that he “has no desire for further funding for Ukraine, and hopes that it will not be necessary.”
