Mobilization and martial law in Ukraine have been extended: how long will the legal regime remain in effect?

The Verkhovna Rada has extended martial law and general mobilization for another 90 days. The relevant legal regime will remain in effect until at least August 2, 2026. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing a live broadcast of the parliamentary session.

Members of Parliament voted on the relevant bills during a plenary session of the Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday, April 28. The extension of martial law was supported by 315 lawmakers, while 304 voted in favor of extending mobilization.

Martial Law

Martial law is a special legal regime introduced after the start of Russia’s full-scale aggression. Its introduction is necessitated by a threat to Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity resulting from an armed attack or a real danger of such an attack.

This regime provides for the expansion of the powers of state authorities, military command, local administrations, and local self-government bodies, which is necessary for an effective response to threats and the repulsion of armed aggression.

Who is subject to mobilization

Men between the ages of 25 and 60 who are subject to military service, have been deemed fit for military service, are not eligible for deferment, and are not reserved for specific roles are subject to mobilization.

Citizens aged 18 to 25 may be mobilized only in specific cases:

  • if they are reserve officers;
  • if they have completed their mandatory military service.

Other citizens in this age group may join the military voluntarily by signing a contract.

Women who are registered for military service may be called up for military service or voluntarily involved in work to support national defense during wartime.

Extension of Mobilization and Martial Law in Ukraine

As a reminder, the last extension of mobilization and martial law was announced on January 26. According to the decisions adopted, martial law and mobilization were extended until May 4, 2026.

This latest decision marks the 19th parliamentary vote on extending martial law and general mobilization since the start of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine.
