Moldova Will Facilitate the Transit of Ukrainian Grain — Sandu
18 August 08:20
Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that the country cannot refuse to assist Ukraine, which is resisting Russian aggression, and must facilitate the transit of Ukrainian grain, while calling on the government to find a solution to protect the interests of Moldovan farmers. This was reported by the local news portal Newsmaker, according to "Komersant Ukrainian" .
“If Ukraine cannot sell its products and does not have the money to defend itself, then we will face even bigger problems than the ones we have today. Of course, we need to figure out how to ensure that our sector isn’t hit too hard, but at the same time, we cannot turn our backs on the Ukrainians, who are being bombed every night and who wake up every day to grow grain and resist. Through their resistance, they are also defending our peace,” Sandu said.
According to her, the Moldovan government and farmers, “if they are willing,” can find a solution that will simultaneously ensure the transit of Ukrainian grain and protect the interests of local producers.
“We obviously want our farmers to make money, and I’m sure they will… But we also can’t turn a blind eye when our neighbors have asked us for help. This is an opportunity for us to help them. Other countries are helping them much more—with financial aid and military assistance. This is where we can help them—through these transit routes,” the president emphasized.

50% discount on rail transit of Ukrainian cargo
As a reminder, on August 12, the government of the Republic of Moldova announced an agreement with Ukrainian authorities to reduce tariffs by 50% on the rail transit of Ukrainian cargo through the country from August 10 to December 31, 2026. The executive branch asserts that this measure is beneficial for both countries and could generate several million euros in revenue for the Moldovan Railways.
Ukraine plans to export about 6 million metric tons of goods during the current agricultural year. Moldova expects to attract about 10% of this volume for transit through its territory.
Earlier, the “Forța Fermierilor” association expressed concern regarding the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products through the Republic of Moldova and called for the involvement of local farmers and exporters in managing this process. On August 17, following a meeting with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, farmers warned that they might organize “mass” protests if the government did not make progress on this issue by August 21.
