Russia Threatened Britain Over Nyan Drones — London Responded
18 August 05:54
Russia has threatened the United Kingdom with “consequences” following reports that the Ukrainian military is using British-made drones to strike targets on Russian territory. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing dpa.
The Russian Embassy in the United Kingdom stated that London is allegedly “deliberately choosing to escalate” the war and “attempting to inflict maximum damage on Russia through intermediaries.”
“London’s actions will inevitably have consequences for which it will have to answer,” the Russian diplomatic mission said.
What prompted the Russian threats
Moscow’s statement was prompted by a report in The Times. The publication reported that Ukraine is using drones manufactured by two British companies in a campaign of long-range strikes against Russian industrial and military targets.
According to British media, such drones may have been in use for the past six months. Potential targets include oil refineries in the Volgograd and Yaroslavl regions, as well as logistics and storage facilities.
Ukrainian officials have not disclosed a complete list of the systems used or the operations carried out. Likewise, they have not named one of the two British companies whose drones are reportedly in service with Ukrainian forces.
What Is Known About the British Nyan Drone
One of the drones mentioned in the reports is the jet-powered Nyan One Way Effector. It was developed by the British company Callen-Lenz, which is part of the FalconWorks division of the defense contractor BAE Systems.
According to British media reports, the Nyan has a wingspan of about 2.9 meters, and its maximum takeoff weight exceeds 75 kilograms. The system is also in service with the British Army.
It is a single-use strike vehicle equipped with a jet engine. Such drones can complement more expensive long-range missiles and place additional strain on Russian air defenses.
How Russia Is Threatening the United Kingdom
The Russian Embassy in London accused the British authorities of “deliberately escalating” the war and attempting to inflict maximum damage on Russia through Ukraine.
The diplomatic mission stated that London’s actions would have consequences for which the United Kingdom would allegedly have to answer. At the same time, the Russian side did not specify exactly what measures it was referring to.
Moscow has repeatedly attempted to pressure Western countries that are supplying Ukraine with missiles, drones, air defense systems, and other military equipment.
How the UK Responded
The British Ministry of Defense emphasized that Russia should have no doubt about London’s readiness to counter aggression against Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and its allies.
The ministry confirmed its intention to continue providing Ukraine with equipment to defend against a Russian invasion. There were no indications that military aid would be revised or reduced following Russia’s threat.
According to official data from the British government, by the end of 2026, the United Kingdom plans to deliver 150,000 drones and 350 air defense missiles to Ukraine.
The total value of British commitments to military support for Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion has already reached 16 billion pounds. London also plans to allocate at least 3 billion pounds in military aid annually through 2030–2031.
Why Long-Range Drones Have Become a Problem for Russia
Throughout 2026, Ukraine significantly increased the number of strikes on facilities that supply the Russian army with fuel, ammunition, spare parts, and transportation infrastructure.
According to ACLED, Ukraine carried out three times as many long-range attacks in July as it did in January.
Regular strikes are forcing Russia to spread out its air defense systems among Moscow, military airfields, defense plants, oil refineries, warehouses, and logistics centers.
The more targets that require protection, the more difficult it is to ensure equally dense coverage across the entire territory. Russia is forced to redeploy some of its systems away from the front lines or other strategic areas.
What the Deployment of British Drones Changes
The deployment of British drones in long-range operations signals a deepening of defense cooperation between Kyiv and London.
Ukraine gains access not only to ready-to-use drones but also to the technologies, components, and operational expertise associated with them. At the same time, the United Kingdom can refine its own systems based on data collected in real combat conditions.
