Why It’s Dangerous to Stay Near a Body of Water During a Thunderstorm
Water is a good conductor of electricity. A lightning strike into a body of water or near the shore can be dangerous to people even at a certain distance from the point of impact.
During a thunderstorm, you must immediately:
- get out of the water;
- move away from the shore;
- leave open areas;
- find a sturdy building or a closed car;
- avoid touching metal structures.
Do not continue swimming, fishing, or staying on the beach after hearing the first claps of thunder.

Where Not to Take Shelter During a Thunderstorm
The police urge people not to wait out a thunderstorm:
- under isolated trees;
- near advertising structures;
- near power lines;
- near metal structures;
- in an open field;
- on the shore of a body of water;
- under unstable structures.
Tall, isolated objects can attract lightning, and strong winds can knock down a tree, a utility pole, or a billboard.
The safest places are considered to be a sturdy building or a car with the windows closed.
