Another blackout has occurred at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant: what is known
27 April 04:09
On Sunday, April 26, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant experienced yet another blackout. This marks the 15th blackout since the occupation began in 2022. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Energoatom’s Telegram channel.
According to the report, the nuclear power plant once again lost its external power supply.
“The ‘Ferosplavna-1’ power line was disconnected, causing the plant to go into blackout mode. For an hour and a half, the plant was powered by 19 backup diesel generators,” the report states.
Energoatom emphasized that this is already the 15th blackout at the Zaporizhzhia NPP since its occupation. The company stressed that each such incident increases the risk to nuclear and radiation safety not only for Ukraine but also for Europe.
“The situation once again confirms the need to return the plant to the full control of Ukraine and its legitimate operator—Energoatom—as soon as possible, which is the only guarantee of the safe operation of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant,” the post states.
The Situation Around the ZNPP
The Zaporizhzhia NPP has been under occupation by Russian troops since March 2022. During this time, Russia has repeatedly attempted to grant its control over the facility a pseudo-legal status, disregarding the norms of international law.
As part of diplomatic efforts, the United States has proposed a joint management arrangement for the Zaporizhzhia NPP involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that such an approach is unfair and unacceptable.
Moscow insists that the electricity generated by the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant be shared between Ukraine and Russia.
