New estimate of Russian casualties in Ukraine: 352,000 dead
10 May 00:21
On Saturday, May 9, the publications “Medusa” and “Mediazona” released a joint study indicating that the number of Russian soldiers killed in the war against Ukraine had reached 352,000 by the end of 2025. The calculations were based on lists of the names of those killed, which Mediazona maintains in collaboration with the BBC Russian Service and a team of volunteers, as well as data from the Russian Register of Inheritance Cases, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".
The authors cross-referenced the list of names of fallen soldiers with the Inheritance Registry and calculated the probability of inclusion in the registry for each age and social group of those killed. The resulting coefficient allowed them to convert the number of inheritance cases into actual casualties.

The researchers emphasize that this is a statistical estimate with a confidence interval. “When we cite a specific number, we are referring to the central, most probable values,” they explain.
Structure of Losses
Of the 352,000 deceased, 261,000 are military personnel whose deaths were recorded in the standard manner. The remaining 90,000 are those declared dead or missing in action by court order, whose deaths were registered with a significant delay—180 days or more. To date, journalists have identified the names of over 217,000 people killed in the war.
Foreign nationals who fought for Russia were not included in the count.
