Poll: The U.S.’s global reputation has fallen below that of Russia’s

The United States’ global reputation has been declining for the second year in a row and is now even worse than Russia’s, according to the annual Democracy Perception Index published by the Danish Alliance of Democracies, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" citing DW.
According to this data, the U.S. global image score fell in 2026 from plus 22 percent two years ago to minus 16 percent. Meanwhile, Russia scored minus 11 percent, and China scored plus seven percent.

In addition, the U.S. was named the third-biggest threat to the world—after Russia and Israel.
“The sharp decline in the U.S.’s reputation is sad but not surprising,” noted the foundation’s founder and former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
According to him, U.S. foreign policy over the past 18 months has called transatlantic relations into question, led to the imposition of massive tariffs, and included threats of invasion of a NATO ally’s territory.
Threat of Greenland Annexation
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to assert control over Greenland, which is part of Denmark—a NATO member.
Another source of discontent was the U.S. and Israel’s war against Iran and rising oil prices. After European countries refused to send their naval forces to ensure the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, Trump considered the possibility of the U.S. withdrawing from NATO in April.
The survey was conducted by the Nira Data Institute and covered more than 94,000 people in 98 countries. Perceptions of individual countries on a scale from minus 100 to plus 100 percent were calculated based on responses from 46,600 people in 85 countries. The exact criteria for the survey were not disclosed. The report was published ahead of the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, scheduled for May 12.
