British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who has just taken office, said on Monday, July 20, about their support for Ukraine. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.
The British politician emphasized that he would make it clear to Zelenskyy that there would be “no changes” in London’s support for Ukraine and that he would support the Ukrainian leader “100%,” just as his predecessor, Keir Starmer, had done.
“President Zelenskyy will have no doubt that the UK’s support is unwavering and resolute. That support will be with him, and I, personally, will be with him as well,” Burnham told reporters.
President of the European Council: London and Brussels Are Stronger Together
European Council President António Costa, in turn, expressed hope that efforts to strengthen relations between Brussels and London would continue.
“Over the past two years, relations between the EU and the UK have gained new, positive momentum,” Costa noted. “I look forward to the opportunity to continue deepening our cooperation for the benefit of our citizens and businesses. The United Kingdom and the European Union are stronger together,” he wrote on social media platform X.

Andy Burnham—the former mayor of Manchester—has become the UK’s seventh prime minister in ten years and the fifth since the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine. On Friday, July 17, Burnham was announced as the new leader of the Labour Party.

The charismatic Labor politician is seen as the hope of the party’s moderate left wing and has many years of experience working at the national and regional levels. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 2001. He held various high-ranking positions in the cabinets of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown ; in Brown’s government, he served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Secretary of State for Culture, and later Secretary of State for Health.

Burnam was the sole candidate for the Labour leadership. He was supported by 379 of the 403 Labour MPs in the House of Commons. The former mayor of Manchester promises to improve the standard of living for the population. Burnham is expected to reshuffle the cabinet in the near future.
During his nine years as mayor of Manchester, Burnham earned the nickname “King of the North.” Under his leadership, the region’s economy grew significantly faster than the national average, and poverty rates in urban areas declined. The Labour Party also hopes that Burnham will be able to stem the rise in popularity of Nigel Farage and his right-wing populist party, Reform UK.
Keir Starmer announced his resignation on June 22.
