After his election defeat: Orbán outlined his plans for the future

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who remains in office, has announced his resignation from his parliamentary seat; however, he will continue to lead the Fidesz party if its members so decide at the party convention. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Orbán’s video address on Facebook.

Orbán announced that a meeting of the presidium of his Fidesz party had concluded, and the party had decided to “radically reform” the parliamentary faction, which will be formed on Monday. Gergely Gulyás will head it, while Orbán himself plans to relinquish his parliamentary seat.

“The seat I received as the leader of the Fidesz-Christian Democrats list is, in fact, a parliamentary seat for Fidesz, so I have decided to return it. Right now, it is needed not in parliament, but for the reorganization of the national movement,” said the current prime minister.

A nationwide party meeting is scheduled for next week, and the convention to elect the leadership has been postponed until June.

“For nearly four decades, I have led our community; during this time, we have experienced successes and setbacks, victories and defeats in elections. But one thing has remained unchanged: this camp has always been Hungary’s most cohesive and united political community, and this unity is what Hungary needs most right now,” Orbán stated.

He added that the presidium has asked him to continue leading Fidesz, and if the congress approves this decision, he will not refuse.
