SBU employees were caught taking a $110,000 bribe: what were they demanding money for?

Detectives from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and prosecutors from the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) announced that they had uncovered evidence of officials from the investigative department of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Poltava Oblast receiving illicit benefits. According to the investigation, the officials, through an intermediary lawyer, demanded $110,000 from a businessman. According to the investigation, the case involves the head of the investigative department of the SBU Directorate in Poltava Oblast and his subordinate. They were detained while receiving the second installment of the bribe— $55,000.

What the SBU officials allegedly demanded money for

According to investigators, the officials acted through an intermediary—a lawyer.

For $110,000, they were supposed to secure a deal for the owner of a company to supply equipment to Russia through shell companies in Kazakhstan. The charges involve a guilty plea under Part 4 of Article 111-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Caught in the act

The suspects were detained while receiving the second installment of an illegal benefit in the amount of $55,000. According to the investigation, the total amount demanded from the entrepreneur was $110,000.

“The individuals were caught immediately after receiving the second part of the bribe—$55,000,” law enforcement officials said.

Preliminary investigative actions are currently underway. The issue of notifying the suspects of the charges and selecting preventive measures is also being resolved.

This is not the first recent case in which an SBU employee has been caught engaging in corruption. Air Force Logistics Commander Andriy Ukraintsev and Zhytomyr Region SBU Head Volodymyr Kompanichenko were detained on February 25 while attempting to hand over a $320,000 bribe.

They were charged with abuse of office and bribery of a public official. Two days later, they were remanded in custody with an alternative bail of 7 million hryvnias each.
