“His nature is incomprehensible”: Tokayev called on Putin to “freeze the conflict” in Ukraine

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at the 22nd Forum on Interregional Cooperation between Kazakhstan and Russia in Omsk, called on dictator Vladimir Putin to stop the war in Ukraine and return to negotiations, according to [Komersant].
“Perhaps it is time to freeze the conflict and return to the Istanbul Agreements 2.0. Of course, under the guarantees of major powers, including Russia, and continue moving toward the long-awaited peace,” Tokayev said.
According to the Kazakhstani president, he has been receiving “many signals from Europe and the U.S. regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” and he decided to voice this position because “people knew” about his meeting with Putin and “asked him to convey” these proposals.
Tokayev added that “the nature of this conflict is unclear to many, including us,” and expressed sorrow for the people dying in the war: “It’s a shame that young people are dying; they are the genetic heritage of our brotherly nations—Russia and Ukraine… All of this must be stopped. Because what is happening, in my firm opinion, plays right into the hands of our adversaries and brings them joy. Both Russia’s and Ukraine’s,” the president stated, noting that Kazakhstan “has always treated Ukraine with respect” and has “always considered and continues to consider Russia a great power.”
In response, Putin promised to brief Tokayev on “the state of affairs regarding Ukraine.” “As for Ukraine, I will certainly brief you in detail during our conversation today,” he said.
