“Project Freedom”: Trump Prepares to Release Ships in the Strait of Hormuz

4 May 02:14

The U.S. is launching a large-scale humanitarian operation called “Project Freedom” to free civilian ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The mission will begin as early as Monday morning local time. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump on the social media platform Truth Social.

In his post, the U.S. president emphasized that dozens of neutral ships are currently trapped due to the conflict in the region. They are not involved in the hostilities. Trump stressed that some countries have personally appealed to Washington for help.

“Countries from all over the world, almost all of which are not involved in the conflict in the Middle East—which is so obviously and brutally unfolding before everyone’s eyes—have asked the United States if we can help free their ships that are stuck in the Strait of Hormuz, in a situation to which they have no connection—they are simply neutral and innocent observers!” Trump stated.

The operation aims to escort the ships to safe waters so they can continue their work. According to Trump, U.S. representatives are already negotiating with the Iranian side.

The U.S. President noted: “For the benefit of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these countries that we will safely escort their ships out of these restricted waterways so they can go about their business freely and effectively.”

In his statement, Trump emphasized that the crews of the blocked ships are facing difficult conditions. Many are running out of food and drinking water. Remaining in the strait poses a threat to the sailors’ health.

He also added that after leaving the danger zone, most companies do not plan to return to the strait until the situation in the region has finally stabilized.

The US-Iran Standoff

According to some sources, Iran has decided to abandon some of its previous conditions and has agreed to bring the country’s nuclear program to the negotiating table with the US. In addition, the revised agreement also includes a proposal for the gradual resumption of operations in the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the lifting of the US blockade.

The German Foreign Minister held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Germany is also calling on Tehran to renounce nuclear weapons and open the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the Strait of Hormuz remaining blocked for now, oil prices will fall by the end of the year, assures U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The reason will be the UAE’s withdrawal from OPEC, after which the UAE will likely increase production volumes.
