The UN Security Council will convene an emergency meeting at Ukraine’s request

At Kyiv’s request, the UN Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on June 8 in connection with Russia’s recent massive attack on Ukraine. This was announced on the social media platform X by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

“The recent wave of Russian strikes is yet another reminder that Moscow, as before, prefers escalation to peace and terror to diplomacy,” he wrote.

According to the Ukrainian diplomat, continued international pressure on Russia remains crucial “for restoring respect for the UN Charter” and advancing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s proposal to end the war.

“We thank our partners for their continued support and contribution to achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace,” the minister noted.

“I propose setting a specific date for the meeting,” read an open letter to Putin calling for an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine, which was posted on Zelenskyy’s official website on June 4.

There are countries that traditionally host leaders to resolve issues of war and peace, the Ukrainian head of state noted. “Switzerland, Turkey, countries of the Arab world—many are able and willing to host this meeting. It is the leaders who resolve key issues—that is how it has always been and always will be,” the message emphasized.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed the view that other participants, particularly from Europe, who are truly capable of influencing the situation and acting as security guarantors, could join the bilateral track of negotiations. In his words, “Ukrainian and European issues are not resolved in Anchorage.”

“The front line right now is the line from which diplomacy must begin,” the President of Ukraine emphasized in his message.

Putin declined to meet with the Ukrainian leader

Speaking at a plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Putin stated that he currently sees no point in meeting with Zelenskyy. The Kremlin leader called Zelenskyy’s open letter addressed to him “a piece of paper with elements of rudeness” that was “slipped to him” by press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

According to Putin, a summit meeting only makes sense after specific agreements on ending the war have been worked out. He also claimed that he “has never refused to meet with Zelenskyy,” but does not wish to “talk in circles.”
