The fashion world is in mourning: Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian fashion designer, founder of the eponymous fashion house, who changed the perception of style, elegance and business in the fashion industry, has died at the age of 91. The news of the designer’s death was reported by La Repubblica, Associated Press and Reuters, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
A symbol of an era
Armani passed away at his home in Milan, where he had been hospitalized, which he kept secret. According to representatives of the Armani Group, he worked until the last days, preparing a large-scale event in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Giorgio Armani brand, which was to take place during Milan Fashion Week.
“It is with infinite sorrow that the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the company said in a statement.
A visionary who redefined fashion
Armani was born on July 11, 1934 in Piacenza. His path to fashion was atypical: he first entered medical school, but after serving in the army, he decided to change direction and started working in a Milan department store. It was there that his passion for design was born.
In 1975, he founded the Giorgio Armani brand, which quickly became synonymous with understated luxury.
His revolutionary vision – soft lines, minimalism, rejection of rigid forms – changed the idea of men’s suits and women’s elegance. Armani dressed Hollywood stars, politicians, businessmen and ordinary people who wanted to look stylish without being too pompous.
His company brought in over €2.3 billion in revenue annually, and the designer himself remained the sole owner of the brand, retaining full control over all aspects – from creativity to finance.
“Re Giorgio” – the king of Italian style
Armani was not just a designer – he was an architect of aesthetics. He was called “Re Giorgio” – King Giorgio – for his ability to create fashion that does not shout, but speaks the language of confidence and sophistication. He controlled every detail: from the choice of fabrics to the hairstyles of the models on the catwalk.
His death was the end of an era that he himself created. The Italian Minister of Culture called Armani “a universal language of elegance” and “an ambassador of Italian identity in the world”.
Farewell
Giorgio Armani’s funeral will be private, but a public mourning hall will be opened in Milan, where everyone will be able to say goodbye to the fashion maestro.
